Thane, Sep 21 (UNI) Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Mankerao Thackeray today gave a call to the Congress activists in the state to unite and make the party strong for a victory in the coming elections.
He was addressing the party workers meeting here this evening, the first one after taking over as the state unit chief of the party.
At this meeting Prakash Barde, a Shiv Sena corporator along with his followers joined the Congress.
In his address, Mr Thackeray said the opposition parties were poisoning the ears of the citizens of this country. In order to check this the Congress activists should unite keeping aside all their differences.
Maharashtra Pradesh Mahila Congress Chief Pushpa Bonde in her address said the state chief should be aware that the women in the state played a vital role in the decision making process when it come to elections. She reminded him that around 50 per cent voters in the state were female and demanded that at least 33 per cent seats should be reserved for the fairer sex in the coming elections.
Mr Jayant Awle, Executive President and Mr Hussain Dalvai, Spokesman of the party, and Thane district Chief of the party Chandrakant Handore also spoke on the occasion.
Talking to newspersons, Mr Thackeray said the decision whether to go in for an alliance with the NCP in the coming elections would be taken by the seniors in the party.
He also said in order to inform the masses about the work done by the party including the recent Indo-US Nuclear deal, a 'Vikas Yatra' would be taken out in all the districts of the state soon.
Several rallies, and meetings would also be organised at various levels he said.
