Panaji, Sep 22 (UNI) International Master Sriran Jha (ELO 2429) fought back from a precarious position in a widely complicated game, arising from the normally sedate and insipid Breyer variation of the RuY Lopez to beat International Master Aksharaj Kore (ELO 2392) of Maharastra and grab a share of the lead at the end of the 10th round of the Monginis National ''B'' Chess Championship being played at Damodar Sausthan, Zamabaulim in south Goa today.
His co-leader is none other than International Master B Adhiban (ELO 2422), who missed a winning opportunity on the top board against Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi (ELO 2529) of Air India and they both will clash in the decisive 11th round, tomorrow.
Sensing that Negi wanted victory, Adhiban cleverly chose the drawish petroff defence. Just as he had done against P Shyam Nikhil earlier. Negi overstretched blunder and was contemplating on resigning the game. However, he played on for a few moves and Adhiban who missed the winning continuation, blundered right back.
This drawn encounter was the best thing to happen for the tournament as there are three players on eight points all in hot pursuit of the two leaders, Grandmaster Negi and Thipsay (ELO 2444) of Union Bank of India and International Master Saptarish Roy( ELO 2404) of Railways.
Among the Goan players, former State Champion Anurag Mhamal(ELO 2113) continued his fine showing by beating R Premnath (ELO 2257) of Tamilnadu.
Anurag, a student of Maharashtra, had an edge right from an off beat variation of the anti Sicilian opening itself and very soon he was an exchange up with connected Queen side passed pawn.
Premnath resigned to give Anurag his seventh point and tomorrow he will face another Tamilnadu youngster C Praveen Kumar (ELO 2302).
