London, Sept 22 : Britons seem to be at a baby-making spree, thanks to the recent credit crunch, forcing people to spend more time in the bedroom, instead of going to pubs and restaurants.

According to reports, sales of maternity clothes has risen by nearly half last week.

A study has revealed that poor economic conditions, like those in the 70s and early 90s, caused the birth rate to rise. In fact, even the pharmacists have claimed an increase in the sales of pregnancy testing kits and libido boosting remedies

"What's cheaper and more fun than making babies? The trouble is, when they come out they are expensive," British tabloid The Sun quoted Miranda Levy, editor of Mother and Baby Magazine, as saying.

Mel Wilson, a healthcare buyer for Superdrug, added: "This year has seen a sharp increase in sales of products in our sexual health range. Customers seem to be staying at home and making their own entertainment."

Mothercare reported a boost of 20.7 per cent in sales during the first three months of 2008.

Also, upmarket baby chain Mamas n Papas has revealed a 46 per cent rise in sales of maternity clothes last week.
