Coimbatore, Sep 21: Nine people, including two children and three women, were crushed to death, when a speeding truck plunged into the huts at Kodumudi, near Kasipalayam in Erode district of Tamil Nadu early on Sunday, Sep 21.
Police said the ash-ladden truck was en-route to Karur from Erode, when the driver, believed to be in an inebriated condition, completely lost control and rammed into two road side huts and a tiled roof house, a little past mid-night, last nigth.
The victims, mostly farm workers, were sleeping after a day of hard work when the mishap occurred. They included four men, three women and two children. Two others, who sustained serious injuries were admitted to the government hospital in the district.
Eye witnesses said, the driver was found in an inebriated condition and before the local people could realise the tragedy, he took to his heels and escaped. Police registered a case and launched a hunt for him.
