Rain, thunderstorms kill over 150 in UP
Lucknow, Sep 21 (UNI) Rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms for the past two days has killed over 150 people and disrupted road, rail routes, electricity supply and telecom services in Uttar Pradesh.
According to reports, 50 people died in Sitapur district alone while heavy showers wreaked havoc in Lakhimpur Kheri, Lucknow, Shahjahanpur and Bareilly districts.
Central Water Commission informed that due to the heavy rainfall water level of Ganga, Yamuna, Sharda, Ghagra, Gomti, Rapti, Ramganga, Gomti has gone up.
However, all of them were still flowing below the danger level.
The unfavourable weather conditions damaged the Lakhimpur Kheri-Sitapur rail route, besides disrupting the traffic movement in various parts of the state.
Several regions were also left in the dark due to disruption of power supply, the reports said.
Reports from Lakhimpur Kheri said 17 people were buried alive under the debris of their houses due to rains.
Schools in the affected areas have been closed till further instructions. The state administration has also cancelled leaves of its officials.
