Rupnagar, Sep 21 (UNI) The Nangal Hydel Channel was breached at village Bhaowal, about 20 km from here, this morning.
About 150 breaches in the left bank of the Channel were noticed this morning by the villagers, who informed the administration.
The left bank of Nangal Hydel Channel is the bank with SYL Canal, which is constructed parallel to the Channel.
The strong current of water eroded a large portion of the bank quite near to the SYL Canal. The timely detection of the breach prevened the situation from worsening.
Senior officials of the BBMB including Chief Engineer (Bhakra Dam) K K Sharda, SE V N Goel reached the spot and started the breach plugging operation. The machinery of the company involved in the construction of four lanes of National Highway no 21 was pressed into service for plugging the breach. The water flow in the channel was reduced as a result of breach.
Anandpur Sahib MLA Sant Ajit Singh, District Akali Dal president Master Tara Singh Ladal also visited the spot to asses the situation. The exact reason for the breach could not be ascertained immediately.
However, experts feel that lack of proper maintenance of the canal might be the reason for the breach. Due to involvement of inter state interests, the closure of the canal for repairs and maintenance is seldom done, as a result of which, the lining of the canal is in bad shape at several places.
Nangal Hydel Channel which becomes Bhakra Mainline Canal from Rupnagar onwards, is a lifeline for Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.
Mr Goel said 40 per cent of work for plugging the breach had been completed when the work was stopped this evening due to rains adding that the work would be resumed tomorrow morning.
He said situation was under control. He also denied that water release in the channel had been reduced claiming that required 6500 cusecs water was running in the channel.
