Shillong, Sep 21 (UNI) The Damalgre Muga Silk Centre in West Garo Hills district is going to be an active centre for organic evolution since the conducive climatic conditions for starting the Muga Germ Plasm Maintenance Centre will go a long way in conservation of wild elite stocks.

Laying the foundation stone for Muga Germ plasm Maintenance Centre at Damalgre recently, Member Secretary of Central Silk Board Bangalore, Mrs M Sathyavati said muga is unique and it is found only in Assam and Meghalaya.

Muga produced in Assam and Meghalaya is very expensive compared to other silks and there is a steep demand for this material throughout the world.

The initiative taken by the Centre in setting up of maintenance centre in Damalgre is to preserve and conserve the moths which are rare and found only in Nokrek and Balpakram, she said.

Director of Central Silk Board, Mrs P B Lilah, who too was present assured the Board of giving financial assistance to the farmers through the state government.
