Imphal, Sep 20: Manipur University Tribal Students Union (MUTSU) president Sonthang Haokip has demanded 34 per cent reservation for tribals in Manipur Central University.

Speaking to reporters here, he said MUTSU was never pleased with the way the university authorities dealt with the tribals.

MUTSU is annoyed with the authorities, as the latter disrespected the advice of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh to go slow on recruitment in the varsity, he stated.

He said there is seven per cent reservation in MU, while the tribal population in Manipur is 34 per cent.

MU authorities have, meanwhile, said they cannot take a decision arbitrarily on the issue, as it is a Central University and all India norms are applied for the admission.

There is seven per cent reservation for tribals throughout the country which is followed here as well, he added.
