Mahilpur town to become 'soccer city'

Hoshiarpur, Sep 20 (UNI) The Punjab Government is preparing a master plan to develop Mahilpur town as a ''soccer city'' of international standard.

This was stated by Media Advisor to Chief Minister Harcharan Singh Bains after the inauguration of 31st All India Sub Junior Football Championship being organised by Principal Harbhajan Singh Sporting Club at Mahilpur today. As many as 450 football players of 26 teams from all over the country are participating in this 17-day tournament.

Speaking on the occasion Bains said the football academy of Mahilpur town would be upgraded to state level academy and a national level football stadium would also be set up at Mahilpur very shortly.

''Being a nursery of football players, Mahilpur is not only known in the country but also in the entire globe. Jarnail Singh, a well known football player from Mahilpur led India in Olympic Soccer tournament in 1956 and the country won Asian Soccer Cup under his leadership,'' he said.
