New Delhi, Sept 19 (UNI) The Indian Boxing Association has announced the 13-member national squad for the 4th Asian Women's Boxing Championship (AWBC) to be held at Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in Sarusajai Sports Complex, Guwahati from September 23 to 28.

The pugilists were selected after a trial from 40 shortlisted women boxers at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) complex, Guwahati earlier this week.

Abhay Singh Chautala Chairman of the Selection Committee said that the best team at the moment had been picked for the 4th Asian Championship, Guwahati. Arjuna Jaslal Pradhan was the Government observer of the selection committee. G S Sandhu Chief National Coach (Men) and Arjuna awardee D S Yadav, Mehtab Singh were the member of the selection committee.

Names of the boxers, representing states/unit and weight category as follows: M C Marykom (46kg), Kalpana Choudhury (48kg), Chotto Laura (50kg), L Sarita Devi (52kg), Pavitra Haryana (54kg), N Usha (57kg), Pranamika Borah (60kg), S Ibemacha Devi (63kg), Kavita Goyat (66kg), Jyotsana (70kg), Renu Gora Haryana (75kg), Lekha K C (80kg), Kavita Chahal (86kg).

According to a Manipur Information release issued here today, world champion M C Mary Kom, S Ibemcha Devi and world champion L Sarita Devi from Manipur and Assam international boxers Kalpana Choudhury and Pranamika Bora were the northeasterners among the 13 players to represent the nation.

Mary Kom and L Sarita Devi bagged gold medal in the last 3rd Asian Women's Boxing Championship held in Taiwan in 2005. Mary Kom clinched the gold medal beating Steluta Duta of Romania in 46 kg category and L Sarita Devi bagged the gold medal beating Viktoria Rudenko of China in 52 kg weight category in the last 4th World Women's Boxing Championship held in New Delhi in 2006.

About 95 boxers from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Vietnam, Macau, Chinese Taipei, China, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Kazakistan, Mongolia, Korea and India, have already confirmed participation in the meet. About 150 women boxers from 25 countries are likely to take part in the mega event, the release added.
