Two Manipur women wrestlers for 2010 CWG

New Delhi, Sep 18 (UNI) The Steering Committee constituted by the Sports Ministry under the scheme ''Preparation of Indian Teams for Commonwealth Games, 2010'' approved names of 83 wrestlers for their inclusion in the core group of sportspersons for the Commonwealth Games 2010.

The Ministry of Sports today announced that they would be provided the state of art training and exposure both at domestic and international levels for preparing them for the world-class performance. In addition, 12 Indian and 2 foreign coaches were identified as their coaches.

Out of 83 wrestlers, 27 men wrestlers and 28 women wrestlers are for the freestyle event, 28 men wrestlers were for the Greco Roman event.

Two women wrestlers namely L Ranjana Devi (48 Kg) and N Tombi Devi (63 Kg) from Manipur are among the 28 selected women wrestlers.

Ranjana Devi and Tombi Devi were the gold winners in their respective weight category in the NE Sports Festival held in Kohima in 2006.

While Ranjana Devi has clinched gold in the recent state-level wrestling championship held in Imphal, Tombi Devi bagged bronze medal in the 10th National Women wrestling Championship held in Puri in May this year.

The Steering Committee in consultation with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) also approved the Annual Calendar of Training and Competitions (ACTC) prepared by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for imparting training of 305 days in a year for the period from August 2008 to March 31, 2009.

The Army Sports Institute, Pune for Greco Roman and NIS, Patiala for Free style (men and women) were identified as centres for imparting training to the core group of sportspersons.

The Steering Committee has also directed the WFI to start a comprehensive website containing names, profiles of players, profiles, levels of coaches, sports equipment, list of major competitions/ tournaments in India and abroad, details of the National Federation (with names of office bearer and their telephone numbers etc), International Federation etc.
