Kanpur, Sep 18 (UNI) With a view to making the sacred river Ganga pollution-free, yoga guru Ramdev, along with a large number of sadhus and followers, today observed a one-day fast.
In the leadership of the yoga acharya, people staged a dharna at Brijendra Swaroop park here and demanded that the Centre and the state governments take initiatives to make the river clean.
They also handed over a memorandum to District Magistrate Anil Kumar Sagar of Kanpur city, addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the chief ministers of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
Addressing the gathering, well known Sadhvi Ritambhara criticised politicians, saying she and her people had no faith in the leaders.
She called upon the masses to work jointly for making efforts to make the river pollution free.
Former Delhi chief minister Madanlal Khurana said he along with Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal would lead a delegation of sadhus to meet Dr Singh and would request him to declare the holy river a national heritage.
