Nagavali, Vamsadhara river overflowing

Srikakulam, Sep 18: Major rivers- Nagavali and Vamsadhra- are in spate following heavy rains in the district and catchment areas of Orissa, posing a threat to villages in Hira mandal.

Srikakulam District Collector N Srikanth told reporters here on Thursday, Sep 18 that due to heavy rains in Rayagada and Gangam districts of Orissa, the inflow into Vamasadhra river at Gotta barrage in the district was 75,000 cusecs while the flow at Nagavali was 40,000 cusecs.

Revenue officials have been asked to be on full alert, he said adding eight rescue teams, ten boats and expert swimmers were ready to meet any eventuality in the low-lying areas.

He said more than 80 families in Jalumur and Kothur mandals were affected following breach at Nagavali river in Nimmatorivada village for last two days as flood water entered three villages in the mandal.

Road connectivity between Paravatipuram in Vizianagaram district and Rayagada in Orissa, has been distrupted after water at Nagavali touched the third flood warning signal, he added.
