India relocate World Badminton Championships to Hyderabad

By Staff

New Delhi, Sep 18 (UNI) India has switched next year's World Badminton Championships from here to Hyderabad because of a delay in the venue being built for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, said a senior official today.

Director general of the 2010 Commonwealth Games organising committee V K Verma said the world governing body has already been informed about the switch and it has approved the decision.

''We could not afford to risk the world championships with the last-minute completion of the venue,'' Verma said.

Verma, who is also the president of the Badminton Association of India (BAI), said, ''We have no reason to complain and the Badminton World Federation are equally happy.'' The BAI president further assured that work on all stadia here would be completed by December next year and test events will be held as scheduled before the Commonwealth Games.
