Hyderabad, Sep 17 (UNI) Nearly 200 activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) were arrested today when they tried to hoist the national flag at the Secretariat in connection with the Telangana Liberation Day, demanding separate Telangana state.
Raising slogans in favour of separate Telangana state, ABVP and BJYM activists tried to gatecrash into the Secretariat to hoist the national flag, but were taken into custody by the police.
Meanwhile, all the political parties observed Telangana Liberation Day by hoisting national flags at their party offices.
Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee President D Srinivas hoisted the national flag at party headquarters in Gandhi Bhavan and felicitated the freedom fighters, who participated in the Telangana Liberation movement.
Telugu Desam Party President N Chandrababu Naidu also felicitated the people, who participated in the Telangana Liberation movement, after hoisting the national flag at the party office.
Bharatiya Janata Party State President Bandaru Dattatreya demanded that the state government declare Telangana Liberation Day as state festival and officially celebrate it on September 17 every year.
The Independence day celeberations were first held in Telangana region in 1949 after its liberation from the Nizam rule on September 17, 1948, he said after hoisting the national flag at Public Gardens here.
The celebrations were held at Praja Rajyam Party office also, with founder President Chiranjeevi felicitating the freedom fighters.
Leaders of Nav Telangana Praja Party and the Lok Satta too hoisted the national flags at their party offices to celebrate the day.
