Chennai, Sep 17: The special court for CBI cases, here has sentenced a businessman to three year Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) and imposed a penalty of Rs one lakh for offering bribe to a CBI official of ACB.
Special judge K Naganathan delivered the judgement yesterday after completion of trial on a case filed by the CBI.
According to prosecution, Jagdishlal Kanayalal, a city-based garment exporter, in connivance with K Selvaraj, the then Manager of the Union Bank of India's Mount Road branch, cheated the bank to the tune of Rs three lakh.
After the CBI registered a case in this connection, Haridasan Nair, the then Inspector of Police of the CBI, ACB, Chennai, investigated the case, following which, Kanayalal offered him a bribe of Rs 25,000 to show favours.
On the basis of a written complaint from Nair, CBI officials caught Kanayalal red handed while offering the bribe of Rs 5,000 as the first instalment inside a train at Central Railway station on April 19, 1990.
