London, Sept 17 : British Muslims must shed their "victim mentality" and turn more responsible towards their families while ignoring those who propagate conspiracy theories, a senior Muslim MP belong to the Labour Party has said.
Cautioning over the Islamic lessons taught to Muslim kids after school hours, he called on Imams to encourage parents to get more involved in mainstream schools.
The MP also called upon the Muslims to learn English which, in his words, was "directly linked to an increased sense of Britishness" and the glue that binds the Muslims together as British citizens.
"British Muslims also need to step up to the plate. We need to take more responsibility for our own families, ignore those who propagate conspiracy theories, and above all we need to leave behind our victim mentality," the Daily Express quoted the Labour MP Sadiq Khan as saying.
Labour MP said it was time for Muslims to take responsibility for their own lives, and a key way to do that is to learn English.
In a pamphlet for Labour think-tank the Fabian Society, Khan said the British Government must help Muslims fully participate in mainstream society.
The MP said learning English was crucial to Muslims fully participating in society. "It has great currency globally and is directly linked to an increased sense of Britishness and the glue that binds us together as British citizens. Most British Muslims are fully aware that to be a real part of this country we have to integrate. That does not mean losing our religion or culture, but we should not exist in imaginary communities of a non-existent past or ghettos."
Meanwhile, the Muslim MP had attracted ire of Muslim organizations in the UK. Mohammed Shafiq of a Muslim youth organisation the "Ramadhan Foundation" said Khan was "out of touch with the grassroots".
"Muslims around the world were being killed and this added to a feeling of segregation. We do not have a victim mentality but are victims of this Government's failure to deal with real issues around poverty and tackling the underlying causes of why there is terrorism in this country," he added.
