Mangalore, Sep 17(UNI) Former Prime Minister and JD(S) Supremo H D Deve Gowda today accused the BJP government in Karnataka of trying to bring 'Gujarat type of governance' in the state through vandalism.
Addressing a press conference after visiting churches and prayer halls which were attacked by miscreants on Sunday last, Mr Gowda charged that the BJP government was sponsoring attacks on minorities, particularly on Christian community and creating terror situation. "The attacks on the churches and the prayer halls in various parts of the state had caused great insult to the state and has lowered its dignity." Mr Gowda alleged that even the top functionaries of BJP including Mr L K Advani and party chief Rajnath Singh who were present in Bangalore attending the National Executive have kept mum on the attack issue. The BJP had conspired to achieve 'Hindutwa' goal in Karnataka keeping eye on the coming parliamentary elections." Reiterating his demand for judicial probe by a sitting Judge of the High Court, Mr Gowda cautioned that if the government failed to concede the demand, the party would launch statewide agitation and go to the people. He also challenged that the government should include the issue of opposition parties move to destabilize the government in the term of reference in the probe.
He said that the incident during the last three days in several parts of the state including Daxina Kannada which was known for its peaceful nature had spoiled its image at the national and international level. Knowing well that protest would be held by the Christians protesting against the attacks on churches and prayer halls, why the district take the steps of firing tear gas and lathi charges on the innocent people which was evident that it was government sponsored vandalism.
Mr Gowda alleged that of the arrested, as many as 80 persons were from Christian community while only few others belonged to other community.
He said that he would submit a memorandum tomorrow to the President through the Governor.
He lamented that the BJP in the state had started a new political culture through money and power to woo the leaders from the other parties which had never seen by the people of Karnataka.
