Srinagar, Sep 17 (UNI) Calling for adopting holistic approach for exploiting the rich mineral wealth of the state, Advisor to Governor, H H Tyabji said Jammu and Kashmir besides possessing the scenic beauty, owns the vast mineral resources which need to be explored with latest expertise for the overall development of the state.
He said the mineral deposits of the state like limestone, Gypsum, Marble, Dolomite and Granite if exploited properly can give big boost to the state's economy.
He added that the state of Jammu and Kashmir, although possessing rich potential of economic minerals has done very little for exploring the mineral deposits.
The time has now come to overcome the lapses and start exploration and investigation process of the mineral resources of the state, Mr Tyabji said at a board meeting of State Geological Programming here yesterday.
The Advisor said lot of pure sulphur deposits are available in Ladakh region over which necessary exploration work can be done during the working season in the area.
''We have to redouble our efforts and work hard for starting the investigation and exploration process of these rich deposits which are hidden in the hilly belts of the state and have to shun the slow progress in the endeavor''.
Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Industries and Commerce, Dr Pawan Kotwal give a resume of the activities undertaken by the Geology and Mining Department for exploring the mineral resources of the state.
He said Geological Survey of India (GSI) is aware of the infrastructure, manpower and other resources of the state's Geology and Mining Department.
He said the department has also invited the participation of GSI in landslide studies and disastrous management especially in the wake of 2005 earthquake.
He said the Department has also sought the co-operation of GSI in exploration of various base metals, noble metals and other precious metals besides, providing technical know how to the officers of the department to make them self sustained and enable them to face any challenge in future.
