3-day national conference on SEZs to begin tomorrow

Shimla, Sep 17 (UNI) About 40 delegates from various renowned institutions of the country would deliberate on Special Economic Zones in the three-day National Conference to begin tomorrow at Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla.

Eminent scholars, policy planners and social activists from all over the country would deliberate to evolve an in-depth scientific understanding of Special Economic Zones being created by the Centre as 'foreign enclaves' with a view to accelerating export-led economic growth of the country.

The conference with the theme "Special Economic Zones: Economic and Social Perspectives'' is organised by Indian Institute of Advance Study, Shimla in association with Indian Academy of Social Sciences, Allahabad.

Eminenent social scientist Professor Randhir Singh will inaugurate the conference. Mr S P Shukla, President, Indian Academy of Social Sciences and former Member Planning Commission and Secretary (Finance), Government of India will preside over the inaugural session of the conference.

Prominent among those will take part in the deliberation are Dr Alok Sheel, Secretary, Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council, K C Sivaramakrishnan, former Secretary to the Government of India, S P Shukla, former Member Planning Commission of India, Professor Meher H Engineer, former Director, Bose Institute, Calcutta; Professor Amit Bhattacharya, Jadavpur University; Professor D Panda, Editor Bhartiya Samajik Chintan; Professor Satish Jain and Professor Arun Kumar from Jawaharlal Nehru University; Dr. Bharat Patankar, an eminent social activist from Maharashtra, Professor Banwari Lal Sharma.
