SC stays Allahabad HC order to probe UP police recruitment scam
New Delhi, Sep 15 (UNI) The Supreme Court today stayed Allahabad High Court orders directing CBI to investigate the Uttar Pradesh Police Department recruitment scandal.
A bench comprising Justices B N Agarwal and G S Singhvi also issued notices to the UP Government on a petition filed by the CBI.
The Mayawati government had cancelled majority of over 16 thousand recruitments of police constables made by the Mulayam Singh Yadav government.
The Mayawati government had also placed under suspension senior IPS officers involved in the scandal, but the suspension orders were revoked when the IPS officers concerned apologised to UP Chief Minister Mayawati.
The CBI had earlier refused to take over the investigation, saying that it was over-burdened.
According to the CBI, High Court order, directing the CBI to conduct an investigation into the scandal, was not proper.
A large number of constables recruited did not fulfil eligibility conditions, such as height and other minimun qualifications. There were also allegations of casteist bias in the recruitment of the constables.
