Kolkata, Sept 12 (UNI) Kolkata Port Trust (KPT) recorded all time high in container traffic by handling 41,379 TEUs last month, chairman A K Chanda today said.
In an official communique Mr Chanda informed that KPT set an all time high in container traffic in a month, surpassing its previous record of 40,220 TEUs in February.
He further informed that during the first five months of the current financial year (April-August) KPT registered an average growth rate of 15 per cent in comparison to the corresponding period of 2007-08.
He said Haldia Dock Complex of KPT handled coking coal traffic of 7,71,695 tonnes in August against 5,07,000 tonnes in August 2007, signifying the growth of 52 per cent which is the highest handling of coking coal in a month since the inception of Haldia dock in 1977.
Previous highest handling was 6,46,146 tonnes in May 2005, he added.
He maintaned that commodities which contributed to the growth of container traffic at KPT include electronic goods, chemicals, machinery and spare parts, metal ingots, metal scrap, ferro nickel and news print in the import leg and iron and steel, different types of ore, polythene products, jute, tea, industrial raw materials, tin plate and cotton in the export leg.
