States asked to furnish hill road safety proposals in a month
New Delhi, Sep 11 (UNI) Road Transport and Highways Minister T R Baalu today asked all States to furnish proposals for hill road safety within a month.
The request is a follow-up of Mr Baalu's recent visits to various States where he observed absence of retention wall on the hill side, absence of parapet on valley side, lack of proper storm water drainage, and absence of proper signage.
The proposals will be cleared on fast track under the Central Road Fund Scheme in a major campaign to meet the safety requirements of hilly roads, Mr Baalu told a meeting of transport ministers of States and Union Territories.
It was agreed that speed governors should be fitted in transport.
It was also decided to hold a meeting of the State representatives to address the problem arising out of the prevalence of different speed limits at different stretches of national highways.
During the meeting, it was emphasied that overloading of motor vehicles must be stopped.
The States and UTs were also urged to implement sections 44 and 45 of the Persons with Disability Act, 2005 to provide adequate facilities to the physically-challenged.
