Humpy suffers shock defeat in Women's World Chess Championships

Nalchik, Russia, Sep 11 (UNI) Top seed Koneru Humpy of India suffered a shock defeat in the first game of her semi-final against Chinese prodigy Hou Yifan at the Women's World Chess Championships here.

Playing with white pieces against her lower rated rival yesterday, Humpy employed the Breyer variation of the Ruy Lopez.

However, her 14-year-old rival wrested the advantage after the 28th move. Humpy finally gave up after 55 moves.

In the other semi-final, GM Alexandra Kosteniuk of Russia outplayed GM Pia Cramling of Sweden in a game lasting 36 moves.
