Chennai, Sep 10 (UNI) Veteran Communist leader and Economic Advisor of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Prof D Chellappa died in Thanjavur today following brief illness.
He was 81. Prof Chellappa, brother of the Communist Party of India (CPI) state unit Secretary D Pandian, is survived by two sons and two daughters. Mr C Rajkumar, one of his sons, is a senior police officer.
Prof Chellappa started his career as a Lecturer in Azhagappa College. After serving in many colleges, he had acted as the Economic Advisor of Ms Gandhi during 1969-72.
''Russian Economy'', ''Arasiyaluku oru arimugam'' (An introduction to politics) and ''Tamizhal Mudiyum'' (Could be done in Tamil) were some of the books, authored by him.
The state committee of the CPI condoled the death of Prof Chellappa and expressed condolences to Chellappa's family members.
