Kochi, Sep 10 (UNI) Armyman Harwinder Singh piped Railway's Ashok Patel in the home stretch of the 20000 metre walk to bag the gold in the 48th National Open Athletic Championship on the penultimate day here today.
The 23-year-old havildar with A O C, Secunderabad, Harwinder followed Ashok till the last lap and then with extra burst of the speed and with 300 metres to go he overtook the Rail man to emerge leader clocking 1 hour 35.21 seconds.
Twenty one-year old Patel, a technician with Bilaspur Railways, had to be content with the silver with a time of 1 hour 35.32 secs and P S Jalan of Services with the bronze with 1 hour 36.11 secs.
''I was confident of winning the gold medal here and I am happy I could do that,'' the army man said after his victory.
Winner of the bronze medal at the last Open Nationals at Jamshedpur, Harwinder had finished at the seventh position in the England Grand Prix during June last.
Meanwhile, defending champion Railways took their Gold tally to ten with Anil Singh winning the Javelin throw event as he cleared 74.11 metres while Kasinath Naik of Services took the silver with 72.6 metres and Karnataka's Purandar the bronze at 71.78 metres.
Railways medal tally now stands at 10 golds, six silver and five bronze, while the Services are lying second with two golds, two silver and three bronze. Kerala are in the third slot with two gold, one silver and two bronze.
