Railways continue sway over 48th Open National Athletics Meet

Kochi, Sep 9 (UNI) Reigning Champions Railways continued their sway over the 48th Open National Athletics Championship at the Maharaja's College Ground here today, bagging a total of 20 medals including 9 golds, 6 silver and 5 bronze.

Police came a distant second with 7 medals which included one gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze. Services held the third place with 6 medals which included 2 gold, one silver and 3 bronze.

A total of ten events were decided on the second day of the four-day event which began amidst heavy rains yesterday.

Of these, Railways bagged the gold in Men's 1500m, Women's 400m, Men's 400m, Men's long jump and Women's pole vault. It had struck gold in four events yesterday including Men's 100 m.

In Men's 1500 m, Sajeesh Joseph of Railways bagged the gold with a timing of 3:49.95 while Ravinder, also of Railways, got the silver with 3:51.00 and Naresh Yadav of Services settled for the bronze with 3:51.75.

In the Women's 1500m, Shiny Paulose of ONGC bagged the gold with a timing of 4:19.77 while Jhuma Khatun of Railways got the silver with 4:21.27 and S R Bindu of Kerala finished third with 4:21.95 to get the bronze.
