Villupuram, Sep 9 (UNI) Villupuram district police today arrested PMK Legislator V A T Kaliyavarathan for allegedly intimidating State Electricity Board officials and preventing them from discharging their duties.
On a complaint from the SEB employees, posted in two sub-stations in the district, a police team, led by district Superintendent of Police Amalraj, arrested the MLA near the bus stop, this afternoon.
Tension prevailed in the area following the arrest of the MLA, who represents Mugaiyur assembly constituency. Police has been posted in large numbers to prevent any untoward incident.
Police said Mr Kaliayavarathan had visited a SEB sub-station at Karanaipozhichalur on August 30 and Arangandanallur SEB sub-station on September six and held out threats to the employees for frequently resorting to power cuts.
At one sub-stations, the MLA, after accusing the employees of dereliction of duty, had even called for the attendance register and marked absent against those who were not reported for duty that day, police said.
Mr Kaliyavarathan was the second prominent PMK leader to be arrested by the state government, after the DMK snapped ties with the party.
The government had arrested J Guru, a senior office bearer of the party and detained him under the National Security Act (NSA).
