Kochi, Sep 9 (UNI) A week-long national theatre festival of works by Kavalam Narayana Panikkar, the doyen of Malayalam theatre, will be held here from September 15.
The fiesta, 'Pranamam - A Tribute to the Master,' would be organised by the Ernakulam Press Club and the Bangalore-based Regional Resource Centre of the National School of Drama (NSD).
Addressing a press conference here today, Ernakulam Press Club President Antony John and Festival Director Chandrahasan said the event was in connection with the 'Ruby Jubilee' celebrations of the press club.
It was also significant because this year marks the 80th birthday of Kavalam, they added.
A total of eight plays would be performed during the festival, which would be inaugurated by well known filmmaker M S Sathyu.
Kavalam himself would be present on four days from September 16 and talk on his work and career as a theatre person and writer.
Renowned actor Ashish Vidyarthi would direct and present ''Ottayan'' while actor Nedumudy Venu would present ''Avanavan Kadamba'' during the festival.
Kavalam's troupe Sopanam would present three plays, including two Sanskrit plays - Mahakavi Bhasan's 'Karnabharam' and Kalidasa's 'Malavikagnimitram'. It would also perform Kavalam's play 'Kallurutti', which was a theatre adaptation of a myth in Kannur.
'Lokadharmi' would present its award winning Malayalam version of 'Karnabharam' and Bharatiya Kalapeetom would present 'Thuppan.' This was the first time that 'Thuppan' would be presented on stage, Mr Chandrahasan said.
The festival was supported by the Changampuzha Samskarika Kendram and Aplle a Day Properties, John said.
