Chennai, Sep 9 (UNI) A Mahila Court today convicted and awarded 10 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) to a 22-year-old man for raping a nine-year-old girl, two years ago.
Holding that the prosecution has proved the case, Mahila Court Judge A Sampath convicted the man, working as a tailor at Kasimedu in North Chennai.
The judge said the man, who was married and father of a child, deserved no pardon, as he had committed a brutal crime, raping an innocent girl.
However, considering the young age of the accused, the judge said he was awarding him 10 years RI and slapped a fine of Rs 2000, failing which, he should undergo two more years of imprisonment.
The judge accepted the witness of three girls and a boy, who were in the agegroup of 7-9 years-old, who were eyewitnesses to the crime, to convict the man.
The prosecution case was that the victim was playing along with five other girls and boys, when the accused took her away on the pretext of buying her chocolates.
He took the girl, studying in fourth standard in a local school, to a desolated place and committed the crime. The victim's friends, who went in search of her, witnessed the crime and reported the matter to her mother.
The police after filing charge-sheet in the case, cited the three girls and the boy as witnesses. Based on their deposition, the judge convicted the man.
