Srinagar, Sep 9 (UNI) Death of a detenue in the Srinagar central jail early this morning sparked massive demonstrations in central Kashmir.
Official sources said one Mehraj Uddin Dar, resident of Chrawani, near Charar-e-Sharief, was arrested three years ago for his alleged involvement in the militancy-related incidents.
He was lodged in the central jail here, they said, adding he was shifted to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) at Soura early this morning where he died.
The exact cause of his death was not known, they said.
The body was later taken to Police Control Room (PCR) from where it was taken in a procession to the Hyderpora residence of Hurriyat Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, presently under house arrest since September Ist.
Later, hundreds of others joined the procession and the body was taken to Dar's native village where more than three thousand people, raising pro freedom slogans, protested against his death.
Shops and business establishments at Chrawani and other adjoining villages remained closed in protest against the death of Dar.
The processionists were demanding an inquiry into his death.
