59-year old women gives birth to triplets
London, Sept 9 : At 59-years of age, an Asian woman, has become the oldest known mother of triplets after she gave birth to two boys and a girl.
The woman, whose identity remains a secret, had gone through a caesarean section, to give birth to her triplets in a Paris hospital.
It is believed that the lady in question went to a private Vietnamese clinic, despite the 45-year-old age limit for egg donation and in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
"Everything went smoothly," the Telegraph quoted a spokesman at Cochin hospital where the triplets were born, as saying.
The baby girl weighed in at 5.34 pounds as did one brother, while the second boy weighed slightly lighter.
While its illegal for French IVF clinics to help women considered too old to reproduce naturally, her delivering triplets in her late 50s is not only the first time in France but a world's first as well.
However, French health professionals have raised concern that the boundaries of childbirth are being pushed too far.
"Having children at that age is dangerous in terms of child development," said child psychiatrist Nicole Garret-Gloanec.
Earlier this year, an Indian woman said to be 70 years old gave birth to twins after receiving IVF treatment.
