Kolkata, Sep 8 (UNI) The Socialist Unity Centre of India(SUCI) today termed the Singur movement as the Opposition's ''historic victory'' and threatened a major agitation against the state government on violation of its commitments of returning land to the farmers.
Stating that the mass movement had triumphed, SUCI State Secretary Provash Ghosh told newspersons that it was the third ''historic victory'' of the opposition parties during the Left-Front's 31-year rule in the state.
Mr Ghosh elaborated that while re-introduction of English in the primary school curriculum marked the first win, the Opposition was triumphant for the second time when it made the government retreat in setting up a chemical hub in Nandigram.
'' After the Nandigram setback, the state government changed its tactics in Singur by blackmailing the people and propagating a message that Tatas and other industrialists would leave Bengal if the agitation continued in front Nano project, '' he added.
Though the government earlier said no land would be returned back to the farmers from the Tata's Singur project, it later agreed to give away maximum land within the factory area in face of the Opposition's strong movements, according to him.
''The Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee-led Left Front government in Bengal and the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre should take lessions from the Singur movement. There will be a mass movement throughout the country if farmlands are acquired for setting up industry in the name of SEZ, '' Mr Ghosh said.
''We are congratulating the Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee for her leadership as well as the people from all walks of life for their continuous support to the movement,'' he said.
