PM calls for social movement for total female literacy
New Delhi, Sep 8 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today called for total female literacy in the country, saying it has the maximum multiplier efforts on development.
In a message on the occasion of World Literacy Day, he said it will ensure that India becomes the knowledge society and is able to realise her potential in the new century." It is the task of every literate Indian to contribute to this goal and is a collective challenge to be owned by government and society".
While lauding citizens, panchayat representatives, non governmental organisations, private sector and social service organisations for their readiness to address the challenge, Dr Singh called for collective re-dedicate to the task of universal female literacy.
This, he said, was essential because in spite of great strides made in the field of literacy since independence, the country still has a large female non-literate population.
