Youth Baton Relay reaches Gateway

Mumbai, Sep 7 (UNI) The Youth Baton Relay for the Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 today reached the Gateway of India to a grand reception in order to undertake the sea journey to Uran.

Many dignitaries including MP and Chairman of Organising Committee, CYG Pune 2008 and Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 Suresh Kalmadi, Minister of state for Tourism Suresh Shetty, Rear Admiral SPS Cheema, Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command, along with hockey player Dhanraj Pillai and others gave a warm welcome to the Baton here today.

Rahul Bose, renowned actor and sportsperson, carried the Baton through to the awaiting crowd at the Gateway of India. Bose then handed the baton to Kalmadi who in turn handed the baton to Arjuna Awardee Shailesh Khilaje. Kalmadi also felicitated the Arjuna Awardees and the guests present, with replica of the Baton as a memento.

Commissioner Jairaj Pathak also ran with the Baton and then handed it over to the coolies. The famous Mumbai Dabbawalas also participated in the relay which ended at Mumbai University.

With support of the Indian Navy, the Relay swam seven nautical miles from Gateway of India to Uran, which saw participation of more than 100 swimmers from various districts namely Kolhapur, Nashik, Thane, Pune, Mumbai and Raigadh, lead by Arjuna Awardee Shailesh Khilaje. Mr Kalmadi welcomed the baton and thanked the people of Mumbai for their enthusiasm and involvement in the relay.
