Azamgarh/Lucknow, Sep 7 (UNI) Firebrand BJP member of Lok Sabha Yogi Adityanath escaped an attack on him here today even as violence broke out in the city leading to death of at least one person and injuries to 18 others.
Situation in Azamgarh city was tense after the incident, when a mob torched about 12 vehicles, including five of the cavalcade of the BJP MP.
Unconfirmed sources, however, claimed two casualty in the incident.
According to police, the situation in the city was tense and the authorities were considering clamping curfew in the areas like Paharpur-Takia, Badarka, Kot and Rajbahadur.
The disturbances started when an irked mob pelted stones on the vehicles of BJP MP Yogi Adityanath in Takia locality, while he was on his way to address a public meet at the Dav College organised by the Hindu Chetna Manch.
Sources said one paan vendor was killed in the violence, while two among the 18 injured were struggling for life in the hospital. The BJP MP had been taken to a safer place by the police and he was unhurt, sources maintained.
Meanwhile, a report from Gorakhpur said the entire market was shut down after hearing the attack on the BJP MP, while BJP MLA from Gorakhpur Radha Mohan Das Agarwal sat on a dharna in front of DM's residence to protest the incident.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has also called for a 'Poorvanchal bandh' tomorrow against the attack on Mr Yogi.
