Achalpur, Maharashtra, Sep 6 (UNI) In a major relief to the distressed farmers of the Vidharba region of Maharashtra President Pratibha Patil here today laid the foundation stone of a textile mill which will provide employment to about 1500 people.
She urged the people of the region to take maximum benefit of the rehabilitation packages announced by the Centre and state governments.
The President said the composite mill Finlay, being set up by the National Textile Corporation Limited, to come up at a cost of Rs 200 crore, would provide much needed eco prosperity to the region.
She said in the first phase, the mill would start production in March 2009. It would not only provide employment to 1500 people but would generate indirect employment by promoting other small scale industries and tourism industry in the region.
Expressing concern over the suicides by the farmers of the region during the past few years Ms Patil said the mill would on a priority basis give employment to one family member of those farmers who committed suicide.
However, she cautioned that it should not mean that the family members of those committing suicide would become eligible for job in future also.
