Maya petitions Patil for early Parliament session, condemns N Deal

New Delhi, Sep 6 (UNI) The Bahujan Samaj Party, which led the non-Congress and non-BJP group against the trust motion in Parliament over the nuclear deal on July 22, today urged President Pratibha Patil to ask the Manmohan Singh government to call an immediate session of the Union Legislature in the wake of the latest revelations regarding the proposed treaty, or advise the Prime Minister to resign.

The NSG waiver was no cause for rejoicing as it had been achieved at the cost of the freedom of the country to pursue an independent nuclear policy, she said.

Reacting to the news from Vienna, where the NSG by consensus cleared global nuclear trade with India, Ms Mayawati said the deal would greatly constraint India's pursuit of its national interest, and it was because of that reason that the country had refused to sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

Media revelation, on the eve of the NSG meeting, about the US stand, linking the supply of uranium and enrichment technologies to India not conducting nuclear tests had brought the Manmohan Singh government under intense pressure.

Launching a scathing attack on the Government for ''keeping the nation in the dark'' about the real provisions of the controversial deal, she also demanded that the Prime Minister should resign on moral grounds.

Ms Mayawati also felt that yesterday's statement of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee was misleading as far as the India's stand over the nuclear issues was concerned.

Condemning the delay in calling the next session of Parliament, Ms Mayawati said the Government was afraid of telling the truth about the nuclear deal, so it had clubbed the monsoon and winter sessions into one to avoid facing the Houses for some more time.

''Today the BSP is writing to the President to ask the UPA Government to call a Parliament session as soon as possible, or ask the Government to resign,'' she said addressing a press conference here.

''The Prime Minister and his Government have kept the whole nation and Parliament in the dark about the conditions involved in the Indo-US civil nuclear energy deal, so he has no moral right to remain in office,'' Ms Mayawati said.

The present Congress leadership had completely deviated from the independent nuclear policy their leaders had followed after the country's independence. They did not accept the conditions involved in the signing of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty because it was discriminatory, she said.
