Yechury seeks clarification for 'misleading' country
{image-Sitaram Yechury_05092008.jpg news.oneindia.in}Kozhikode, Sep 5: Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury on Thursday, Sep 4 sought a clarification from the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre for 'misleading' the country on the proposed nuclear issue.
Inaugurating a seminar on 'Nuclear Deal and Power Sector' here, he said the government had violated assurances given in Parliament several times that the Hyde Act was not binding on India if it went ahead with the deal but latest revelation in a letter by the Bush Administration to the US Congress had proved it wrong. As such the government had a moral responsibility to clarify why it had misled the nation on the issue, including denying the country its right to conduct nuke test.
He said the Left parties would soon call on President Pratibha Patil to convene Parliament to enable the government to give a clarification on the Floor on the House. Criticising the UPA government for skipping the monsoon session of Parliament and combining it with the winter session, he said they wanted to keep the people and the House in dark on the important issue relating to national security.
He said the latest revelation had vindicated Left's stand and its withdrawal of support to the UPA government at the Centre on the issue.
