Seeded players move comfortably at Telegraph chess

Kolkata, Sep 3 (UNI) Seeded players expectedly had another comfortable day today in the second round of 20th Telegraph Schools' Chess Championship being played at Gorky Sadan.

Top seeded Satyajit Kundu of Vivekananda Mission School checkmated his opponent Biswadeep Saha of Delhi Public School after 38 moves of a Sicilian defence. The games on the next two boards were tame affairs.

Second seed Sayantan Das of the Scottish Church Collegiate School took only 23 moves of a Ruy Lopez game to crush Bhaskar Viswaroopanand of St.Xavier's School, Puri.

Third seed Hemant Sharma of Ramjas School, Delhi, employed the Sicilian defence to checkmate Debangshu Chakrabarti of Calcutta Boy's School on the 13th turn.

Fourth seeded Prince Bajaj of Delhi Public School, Ghaziabad, was made to sweat it out for 50 moves by tribal boy Cheela Naga Sampath of Etasi-Timpany Private School.

Asian U-12 Champion Girish Koushik of St Thomas School, Mysore, made short work of Debayan Das Gupta of South Point School.

Asian U-10 Champion Diptayan Ghosh of South Point School used a wicked pin to overcome Devdoot Mazumder of Don Bosco School. Devdoot used up all his time in trying to find an appropriate defence.

The highest rated girl Pallabi Roy notched up one of the quickest victories against Ishan Jhawar in only 17 moves.

The third round games are expected to be closer encounters with the rated players coming up against each other.
