Madurai, Sep 3 (UNI) Protesting against the publication of a cartoon of Prophet Mohammed in a Tamil newspaper, scores of members of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) and Manitha Neethi Paasarai, a Muslim outfit, staged demonstrations at several places, burnt copies of the daily and attempted to lay a seize to the Office of the daily here today.
Tension prevailed at Chokkalinga Nagar, where the Office of the daily was located as about 600 members of the Paasarai assembled to siege it. However, a strong police contingent deployed for security asked the protestors to disperse. There was a heated argument between the agitators and the police.
Meanwhile, some of the protestors forcibly snatched copies of the daily from retail shops and burnt them and pelted stones on the name board of the daily. They also blocked vehicular traffic in the area.
When the situation went out of control, the police swung into action and arrested them.
At Nelpettai area, an unidentified gang pelted stones on a government bus, damaging its wind screen.
Round-the-clock police protection has been given to the Office of the daily. police pickets have been posted in sensitive areas to prevent further trouble.
