Ranjeet upsets Sushil Kumar

By Staff

Chennai, Sep 2 (UNI) The first round of the main draw singles in ITF Futures Tennis championships here witnessed fluctuating fortunes for Indians even as V M Ranjeet upset fifth seed Sunil Kumar Sipaeya 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The other causalities included Chandril Sood, Taushar Liberhan, Palash Tiwari, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and seventh seed Ashutosh Singh.

Ranjeet lost the first of the three set contest, lasting 150 minutes, in the gruelling heat. Basically a slow starter, he however pulled up his socks and worked out a different game plan to dislodge his experienced opponent in the second and final set 6-4 and 6-3.

Sunil was not comfortable with his ground strokes and made too many unforced errors in his volleys at the net.

Jeevan , a wild card entry, currently studying in USA had to bite the dust despite putting up a spirited show against fourth seeded Korean Hyun Woo Nam in a three setter in 150 minutes 7-6, 4-6, 5-7.

The Koreans displayed better grit and determination as the close contest progressed.

P C Vignesh beat seventh seeded Ashuthosh Singh of India with Ashutosh conceding the match in the final set when Vignesh led 3-1.
