New Delhi, Sep 2 (UNI) Just over a month ago, this ''prodigiously talented'' voice was silenced by the cruel pangs of fate.
He may no longer be there but for his multitude of fans and well wishers in the country, especially in Punjab, and for the people from the music world, Voice of India winner Ishmeet Singh's sweet memories will always remain embedded deep in their heart.
On the occasion of his 20th birthday today, the family and friends of the late Ishmeet Singh reminisced about their sweet memories of the singer and wished his soul to rest in peace.
Ishmeet, who died after drowning in a swimming pool on July 29 in Maldives where he had gone to perform, would have celebrated his 20th birthday today.
Remembering Ishmeet, whose win in the Star 'Voice of India' reality show made him a household name overnight, people from the world of Punjabi music said he was ''bright star on the musical horizon'' and had it in him to carve a niche for himself as a singer to reckon with in Bollywood.
''Ishmeet was a very prolific singer. His voice had a unique quality about it. It is really sad that he was taken away from us by the cruel work of fate at such a young age,''says noted Ghazal Singer Jagjit Singh.
Said the Ghazal Maestro, who recently released the music of the Punjabi film 'Sat Sri Akal', the only film for which Ishmeet had given playback before his death, said,''listening to the shabad sang by Ishmeet gives one an idea of the prodigious talent of Ishmeet.'' A joint production of Mata Triptaji Charitable Trust (Regd) at Chandigarh and Frankfinn Entertainment company Pvt Limited, 'Sat Sri Akal', a humble tribute commemorating 300 years of the Gurta Gaddi Diwas (Coronation) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, has one shabad rendered by the late Ishmeet Singh - his first, last and the only playback in any film.
Says the Secretary General of the Mata Triptaji Charitable Trust (Regd), Bhupinder Singh Bhoop,''the shabad that he sang for 'Sat Sri Akal' was earlier to be sung by Abhijeet but we realised that the pitch of his voice did not suit the requirement of the song so we decided on Ishmeet.
Ishmeet was quite excited about singing the shabad and sung it very passionately. Even though today Ishmeet is not in this carnal world, I am happy that his voice in 'Sat Sri Akal' will continue to reverberate forever across the Universe.'' Remembering Ishmeet, Punjabi Pop singer Daler Mehndi says,''what was unique about Ishmeet was that despite his Punjabi background, he used to sing any song easily without the Punjabi accent.'' Remembering Ishmeet as a ''wonderful, down-to-earth and sincere'' person, Bhoop said,''Ishmeet not only went on to be become a beacon of light for the Sikh community when he won the contest, he was also a source of inspiration for horde of young and aspiring singers.
The news of his demise brought sorrow not only to his family, but the entire state of Punjab, his native state. The nation also mourned his death.'' On the occasion, Ishmeet's co finalists in the 'Star Voice of India' were overcome with a feeling of nostalgia.
His 'Voice of India' co-contestants reminisced how they had celebrated Ishmeet's 19th birthday in a grand manner.
''For us Ishmeet is still just a "guy with an ever smiling face" who lights up the surroundings with his infectious smile,'' says his co-contestant Irfan.
They hoped that God would give his family the strength to come to terms with his death.
