Singur, Sep 1 (UNI) One of the flanks of the Durgapur Expressway opened today for the free passage of vehicles, which remained stranded for the last eight days since Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee laid siege.

Work remained suspended in the Tata Motors Nano car project for the fourth day today as the stalemate continued in Singur following Ms Banerjee's refusal to call off her indefinite dharna.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials and district police today opened one of the lanes of the National Highway two at 0900 hrs and supervised the movement of vehicles carrying goods.

However, the traffic soon got disrupted when people started gathering from 1100 hrs to attend a small-scale traders' meet at 1300 hrs, which was addressed by Ms Banerjee.

SP(Hooghly) Rajiv Mishra said the highway soon got blocked due to the crowd, adding traffic movement would be restored at night after the meeting.

In a show of solidarity, renowned filmmaker Aparna Sen, singer Kabir Sumon, actress Shaoli Mitra and dramatist Bratya Basu today attended the dharna mancha spearheaded by the Trinamool Congress supremo.

Ms Mitra informed that a letter had been sent by the intellectuals to Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee expressing their desire to hold talks in a bid to solve the Singur impasse.
