Procurement of 'copra' begins in Andaman
Port Blair, Sep 1 (UNI) Andaman and Nicobar Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation Ltd today started procuring 'copra', the dried coconut meat yielding coconut oil, from the farmers under the Centre's Price Support Scheme at the rate of Rs 36 Per kilogram.
Union government's nodal agency National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) has appointed the Andaman and Nicobar Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation Ltd (ANCOFED) as their agent for procuring copra from Andaman District, Little Andaman and Campbell Bay.
Farmers from the far flung islands have been waiting long for selling their produce under the scheme.
However, the quality of the copra had to be certified by the Department of Agriculture officials in line with the specifications laid down by the NAFED before the procurement, ANCOFED Chairman Kuldeep Rai Sharma told UNI.
