Thrissur, Sep 1 (UNI) A Catholic nun belonging to the congregation of Mother of Carmel has resigned from the Order after 26 years of service alleging ''mental torture.'' Sister Dr Jesmi, who was also the principal of St Mary's College for the last four years, announced her decision to quit the congregation yesterday.
She told newspersons that she had to resign following mental harassment by the Church authorities.
Sr Jesmi alleged that the Church and convent authorities had accused her of having mental problems when she questioned the Church's stand on self-financing colleges and certain other issues.
She said she was also referred to a psychiatrist by the Church authorities.
Before submitting her resignation letter, she had tried, but in vain, to meet the Bishop of the Syro-Malabar Church of the Thrissur diocese, she said.
Sr Jesmi said she would continue as a teacher and a sanyasin outside the Order and the Church.
Meanwhile, the CMC provincial house here said in a statement that the allegations raised by Sr Jesmi were totally baseless.
