Jayankondam, Aug 31 (UNI) Vehicular traffic on the busy Thanjavur-Chennai highway was affected for about 30 minutes as some ruling DMK men and villagers of Kattagaram led by their Union secretary Dhanasekaan, resorted to a road roko agitation at Meensurutti near here today.

The agitators were protesting against the police for not taking action against a Pattali Makkal Katchi(PMK) functionary Velusamy, who had allegedly attacked Kattagaam village panchayat President Elumazhai, after a heated argument over awarding a civil contract.

According to Elumazhai, the government had allotted him Rs five lakh to desilt a local tank in the village under Anna Marumalarchi scheme. While the work was in progress, the PMK functionary Velusamy demanded that the desiltation contract be given to him. When he pleaded his inability an enraged Velusamy thrashed him, Elumazhai said.

He lodged a complaint with Meensurutti police station against Velusamy, but police did not take any action against him.

On information, police rushed to the spot, pacified the agitators and restored normalcy.

A hunt was on to nab Velusamy who was absconding, police said.
