TN University student dies during Marathon

Chennai, Aug 31: A 22-year-old Anna University student, who participated in the 'Marg GiveLife Chennai Marathon' collapsed and died on Sunday, Aug 31 morning. Police said M Santhosh (22), who took part in the professional category comprising 21.09 km marathon, fainted and fell at the finishing point.

Even as he asked for water, he fainted and collapsed. He was rushed to a private hospital and then to the Government General Hospital, where he was declared dead. Santhosh, hailing from Oochampalli village in Krishangiri district, was a final year M Sc student in Anna University.

Meanwhile, striking force personnel, deployed on security duty, averted a possible stampede, when a group of school children slipped and fell in the crowd at the starting point.

However, nothing amiss took place as the security personnel quickly intervened.

The response to the Marathon, which carries a prize money of Rs 50 lakh, was unprecedented as more than 50,000 people, including sportspersons, film stars, celebrities, corporate honchos, politicians, bureaucrats and police officials participated.
