Thane, Aug 31 (UNI) The railway stations of Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad and Kandivili of the Western Railway line are considered as death traps, as maximum number of deaths have been recorded at these railway stations, Western Railways Deputy General Manager Sameer Lohani said today.

Mr Lohani, while speaking to mediapersons here today also said, in reply to another query that a report by the railways has indicated around 600 deaths annually during the periods between 2005-06, 2006-07 and 07-08.

The number of injured are double then those who lost their lives in the period the report stated, according to Mr Lohani.

Thane District Railway Passengers Association President Om Prakash Sharma said that under the Railways Act, 1989 there was no provision in the Railways Act 1989 for giving compensation suo moto to the victims or relatives of the victims or in alternate employment to a member of the affected family.

Mr Sharma demanded that under the prevailing circumstances, the railways should get the Act amended so that it takes care of the present situation and requirements.

He also said that the Railway Board should without loss of any time set up a commission to look into the cause of deaths due to accidents and ensure that the number of deaths are reduced.
