Mayors in Rajasthan to be elected through direct elections
Jaipur, Aug 30 (UNI) Mayors and Chairpersons in Municipal Corporations or Municipalities in Rajasthan will now be elected through direct elections.
The Rajasthan Government has decided to promulgate ordinance- Rajasthan Municipalities Ordinance 2008, to accommodate the above provision and other municipal reforms in the form of a model unified Municipal Act.
The Rajasthan Cabinet today approved the draft of the ordinance and asked the Urban Development Department to forward the same to Governor S K Singh for his consent.
After the Governor's consent the ordinance will be sent to the President Pratibha Patil for the obligatory approval, Rajasthan State Government Spokesman and P W D Minister Rajendra Singh Rathore said.
The new act would ensure more autonomy and would pave the way for bringing a series of reforms in the functioning of the Civic bodies, Mr Rathore said.
The new act was being brought to replace the 49-year-old Rajasthan Municipal act, 1959, he added.
